Gearing Up Refresher Course

The Ottawa Safety Council will now be delivering the Canada Safety Council's Gearing Up Refresher Course. If you are a rider that has riding experience but might not have taken a basic motorcycle course in the past and you are interested in refreshing your skills at a very basic level, then this may be the course for you.
Note: This Gearing Up Refresher Course does not include your provincial license test. Students must hold a valid "M" or "M2" license, with riding experience, to take this course. Our full Gearing Up course includes your license test and accomodates novice riders.
We will provide the motorcycle or you may ride your own motorcycle.

Note: because of some scheduling problems with our teaching location, we can currently offer only the option where you provide your own motorcycle for this course. We hope this situation is temporary. Contact the office for details.

Our trained instructors will refresh your skills in slow speed control, braking, emergency stopping, swerving and emergency swerving. The basic skills of balancing a motorcycle and moving off from a stop using a clutch will not be reviewed since this course is not intended for the novice rider just entering the sport. For more information about learning how to ride, please visit the section on the Gearing Up Course.
The Gearing Up Refresher Course will be conducted over three evenings, scheduled according to demand and the availability of teaching locations.
The first evening will be a 3 hr lecture discussing riding techniques, attitude, riding gear and traffic scenarios. The second and third evening will be 3 hrs of riding each night for a total of 6 hours of riding. A riding skills evaluation will be administered at the end of the course and a rider must achieve a pass mark in order to receive their CSC certificate. You may ride your own bike or we will supply a motorcycle and all required fuel at no extra charge. Full riding gear is required. See this page for further information on riding gear.

Fees and Schedule

Contact our office for current schedule information. The fee for the course is $169.50 (HST included).

Note: Students will need to provide their own motorcycle for GUR Courses that use the alternate format consisting of one evening of lecture and one day of riding . If using a personally-owned motorcycle for the program it must be currently licensed and insured; proof of current registration and insurance must be provided on the lecture night prior to the commencement of the course (copies not acceptable); student-supplied motorcycles must be street legal and pass a pre-ride safety inspection.
The lecture portion of each course is on a weeknight, usually a Monday. The details will be confirmed when you contact the office to register.
For a more comprehensive skills development course, you may wish to try our Experienced Rider Course (ERC). This 1-1/2 day course is more intensive and requires a fully insured motorcycle.
For a less intensive introductory course, you may be interested in our Gearing Up Introduction course, which offers 3 hours of basic training in motorcycle operation.
