Gearing Up Safety Lecture
Evening Safety Lecture The Gearing Up course begins with a classroom safety lecture. location instructionswith your registration package. The lecture normally takes place on the Wednesday night of your course week, from 7:00 PM until around 10:00, usually in the meeting room at 1505 Carling Avenue. (Some sessions are at other locations - check with the office for the session you will be attending.)

Prerequisites
You must be a registered student in the Gearing Up program to attend the safety lecture. When you register you will receive a student kit including a training manual. Read the training manual and complete the written test at the back before the Wednesday night lecture.
You should also bring your riding gear to the Wednesday night lecture for inspection.
Note that the safety lecture will end after dark. If you are riding a motorcycle with your M1 license, you should not ride it to the lecture since it would be illegal for you to ride it home in the dark afterward.

Lecture Format
Discussing Intersection SafetyThe Wednesday safety lecture is intended to be informative and enjoyable, and it is normally quite interactive. The lecturer will be one of our regular riding instructors, and might be the instructor assigned to you for the hands-on session.
When you arrive the instructor will interview you for details of your riding experience. It is important that you give them an accurate picture of your level of experience, because this information is used to group you with other students of similar expertise and with an instructor who specialises in students of your level. Lecture topics will include:

Graduated Licensing. We will ensure you understand the system in which you are now a participant.

Why Ride? We discuss reasons why people ride motorcycles, including comparisons to other forms of transport. This highlights the safety factors involved in riding.

Safety and Conspicuity. The key to being safe is to be aware of how difficult it is for other persons to see you, and to act to correct that.

Lane Position, one of the primary safety tools you have as a motorcyclist.

Scanning & planning, a process of constant awareness of your situation and the world around you.

Safety Gear, a discussion of the various kinds of riding apparel, degree of protection, and quality.

Following the general lecture, your completed written tests will be graded and you will have a chance to discuss any questions on which you disagreed. Finally, each student's riding gear will be inspected for safety and suitability. If there are problems with your gear, you will have Friday to correct them before the weekend riding sessions.
We'll make sure you know where the hands-on riding sessions are, and can give you a map. Wednesday night is also an excellent opportunity for students to arrange carpools to overcome any transportation difficulties.
