Becoming an Instructor
We're proud of our qualified instructors. If you're a good rider and
public speaker and want to share your love of motorcycling, you might like to become a Motorcycle Rider Course instructor.
Certification allows you to teach with any Canada Safety Council course in the country.
Here's how you do it.
Qualifications
| |
License.
You must have a valid motorcycle license (full M in Ontario or Quebec equivalent) and
a good driving record.
Motorcycle.
You must own a properly licensed motorcycle
and be an active rider with a minimum of three years
riding experience.
Gear.
You will be setting an example to students, so
you must have a complete set of
riding gear
in good condition.
Speaking.
You should be a comfortable and effective public speaker
.
Time.
You must be prepared to make the substantial time investment
for the training
and required teaching assignments outlined below. |
Training
After you
contact the office to express your interest in instructor training, you will meet and discuss the requirements and your interest with one of our chief instructors. If we proceed, you will receive instructor training from January through May to prepare you for training in the spring of that year. This training is free - you donate only your time. (You may decide you need to purchase additional riding equipment as you proceed.)
| |
Time.
Training totals 60-70 hours, not including first aid and apprentice teaching.
Classroom Sessions.
You will attend approximately ten classroom sessions,
one night per week, to
study adult learning theory, our teaching approach, and the Gearing Up curriculum.
First Aid.
You will attend a two-day First Aid and CPR course.
If you have a current certificate for an acceptable
level of first aid you may be excused from this course.
Practice Teaching.
You will attend several two-day weekend sessions in which you
first take the course as a student, then practice teaching
it to your fellow instructors.
Apprenticeship.
You will apprentice to a qualified instructor and assist
in teaching several courses in the spring until you are
ready to instruct a group on your own.
|
Obligations
Instructors have certain obligations to the organisation.
| |
Minimum Course Load. First-year instructors must teach a
minimum of five courses during the season. Returning
instructors must teach a minimum of four courses.
Fall Tear-Down. You are expected to assist with the
autumn activities that end the course season: bike
cleanup and storage, etc.
Work Parties. You will be asked to attend some of the work parties through the year for other
chores: bike maintenance, trailer cleanup, etc.
|
Upkeep
To remain certified, instructors must retain their motorcycle license and good driving record, renew their First Aid training every two years, and attend the spring refresh training each year. There are also optional Safety Council conventions and instructor rallies each year to further enhance your skills.
If you would like to register for instructor training,
please contact our office.
