Our flagship training program is the Gearing Up course, a
national program developed by the
Canada Safety Council.
Gearing Up is a recognized safety program under the
graduated licensing system of the
Ontario Ministry of Transport.
Gearing Up is targeted at novice riders, or riders with some experience
needing a skills tune-up and certified safety program. Complete beginners who
have never before touched a motorcycle regularly learn to ride and pass their
Road Test through this course, while riders with some experience receive coaching
that improves their skills and knowledge. Riders of all skill levels take the same
skills test.
By completing the Gearing Up program, you will receive personal training and coaching in riding skills by
qualified instructors
who are, themselves, dedicated motorcycle riders. You will be grouped with other
students during the weekend in a 5:1 student/instructor ratio. By passing the test at the
end of the course, you will receive a letter of completion that earns you a
discount from most insurance companies, and the official paperwork that allows
you to graduate to an
Ontario M2 license
without taking an additional road test.
We also offer all-women courses on an occasional basis. Click here for more information.
The course consists of a three-hour interactive classroom safety lecture, a written test, two days of hands-on riding instruction and practice, and a skills test. We provide the
motorcycle for your riding, and you get
exclusive use of it for the weekend.
The course elements are taught during a single calendar week.
The safety lecture is on a Wednesday night and the hands-on riding is all day Saturday and all day Sunday, with the skills test taking place at
the end of the Sunday afternoon. Riding practice takes place rain or shine.
The safety lecture and riding practice are taught in a classroom and a series of parking lots in Ottawa. Detailed maps and location instructions
are available.
To participate in and graduate from the Gearing Up program, you must comply
with the following rules and conditions.
| |
You must attend all the lessons, including the safety lecture and all lessons in the riding practice. You may not skip sections you think you know, or you will not be allowed to take the skills test. Because your instructor will be managing five or six students, you must be on time for each lesson. If you miss, or are late for, critical lessons, you may be asked to withdraw and repeat the course at another time when you can be in full attendance.
You must have your M1 license to receive the paperwork that allows
the skills test to serve as your road test for graduating to M2. It is
essential that you have the M1 paperwork with you on Sunday afternoon.
We cannot issue your road test paperwork unless you have your M1 form with
you for the test.
You must have proper riding gear for inspection Wednesday night and to be worn at all times during the riding practice.
Because we want to maximise your riding time, and because many lessons are prerequisites to later lessons, the weekend schedule is critical. Please come prepared to remain on-site for the full two days. You will have a lunch break each day with time to visit one of the nearby fast-food restaurants, but you will not have time to leave the site for coffee breaks or to do other weekend chores. Bring refreshments with you and be prepared to dedicate your time and attention to the riding practice.
Because you will be riding our motorcycles,
you do not have to own your own bike or
have motorcycle insurance in place to take our course.
Your instructor is responsible for your safety and the safety of
the other students. If your instructor feels you are unable to develop
the necessary skills to safely operate a motorcycle, they are authorised
to ask you to withdraw from the course, and to disqualify you from taking
the skills test.
Unsafe behaviour of any kind will also result
in your removal from the course. |
The fee for the Gearing Up course is $399 (HST included).
The fee includes all of your training, course materials, and handouts; the full use of a motorcycle, fuel, and oil for the riding session; and the right to attempt the skills test two times during the calendar year. The fee does not include riding gear, which you must supply,
or meals and refreshments.
Note that our courses normally sell out so be sure to book early. Should it be necessary for you to cancel your reservation, please consult our refund policy.
If you are not sure you are ready for the full Gearing Up course you may be interested in taking our Gearing Up Introduction course first. It provides 3 hours of introductory hands-on training the operation of a motorcycle, similar to the first few hours of the Gearing Up course.
Once you graduate from the Gearing Up program, you can visit a License Centre
and get your M2 license.
Then, you practice and improve your riding for at
least eighteen months, and not more than five years, before applying for your
full M license. We recommend our M2 Exit course as
the best way to prepare yourself and take the M2-to-M test. We also have a one-day Experienced Rider Course that many riders find useful as
an annual skills tune-up, and a Gearing Up Refresher course that offers a skills tune-up at a more basic level for riders feeling they need more practice, or who are re-entering the sport.
The Gearing Up program runs weekly from May until October. Enrolment in each session
is limited by the number of motorcycles available,
and sessions fill early.
We would be delighted to introduce you to the joy of motorcycling.
