World Icon Not From Around Here?

Ontario Map icon If you're not from the general Ottawa area, you're probably not a potential customer of our course, but are obviously interested in motorcycling. We want you to know you are very welcome on our web site.
We are a non-profit organisation of dedicated motorcycle riders, and are mainly interested in fostering the safe enjoyment of motorcycles. Even though you won't be taking our course, we hope you're finding this information useful.
This page outlines how this local Ottawa information may apply to you if you live elsewhere. Motorcycle training programs are similar everywhere, so the course descriptions may still give you a good idea of the training available in your locale. We also hope you will follow our advice regarding proper riding gear, and that you find our riding tips useful.

Where Are You From?
If you're from elsewhere in Ontario, all the information in this site applies to you except the specific course schedules, pricing, and instructor training.

If you're a Canadian outside Ontario, the regulatory and licensing information will be different. However, the Gearing Up course is a Canada Safety Council standard, and you'll be able to find a similar course near where you live. The CSC web site lists all the course providers in Canada.

If you live in the United States of America, the CSC courses are not offered. However, the Motorcycle Safety Foundation courses were originally based on the CSC courses and you'll find the course descriptions here aren't far off. The licensing and regulatory information is, of course, not applicable to you.

If you live outside North America, similar training programs are likely available in your country, but we can't list them all here. Licensing and regulatory information will be different, of course. Note that one important difference is that many countries limit engine size or power for new riders.

Around Canada
Here is a general outline of the kind of changes you should expect if you are taking a Canada Safety Council-approved course other than ours.

Canada Map icon Prices are not standardised by CSC, but the courses we're aware of are in the general price range we quote.

Quality is regulated by CSC. You can be sure you are getting approved course content, qualified instructors, and approved teaching facilities with any CSC-approved course in the country.

Gearing Up is a CSC standard course, offered at many locations around the country. The test will be adjusted for your provincial requirements, but the course approach and content are standard. The course schedule will be different and the number of hours of training may vary.

The M2-Exit course is taught only in Ontario, but CSC providers in other provinces will offer equivalent courses if applicable. In Ontario, the M2-Exit course is standard and the test criteria are provincially regulated. Unfortunately, not all course providers in Ontario offer the M2-Exit course. (It's less profitable and harder to qualify instructors.) So make sure you have identified your M2-Exit course provider before the 5-year deadline approaches.

The Experienced Rider Course has no licensing status and is not standardized, but many teaching organisations offer a similar course, generally along the lines of the format we describe. Many, unfortunately, are also unable to offer the ERC because they have had to decide to dedicate the space and instructors to their more basic courses.

Your local organisation probably offers something like our Winterizing course. (It's simple to teach, and is work we have to do anyway.) It's not a standard CSC offering, however. If your regular training provider doesn't have such a course, your local community college may teach an introductory mechanics or small-engines course that would be valuable.

Instructor Training, if you are interested, will vary from location to location. CSC instructor requirements are standard, but most course providers take them as a minimum and extend them in various ways. At most locations, instructor candidates must pay for their training (ours is free) and the fees vary.
